Sections are made up of categories that are interrelated with one another. A section title will normally embody or represent the categories under it. Categories on the other hand define the articles under it. Articles meanwhile are the building blocks of content in Joomla. These can be made up of blogs or descriptive articles.
Sections normally represent the functions and objectives of a particular site. For example, if you developed a site about cars, your sections might be about European cars, American cars, and Japanese cars. Under each section, may be categories on the different brands of cars particular to a geographical location or country, such as Fiat, Porsche, General Motors, and Honda. Further down are articles that would further specify the type or model of cars that each brand sells or manufacturers, for example sports cars, compact cars, and SUVs.
The first thing that you should do when managing content on your site is to come up with as many sections and categories first before developing your articles. This will make content organization easier.
Another thing that is important when managing content in Joomla is to group related sections, categories and articles together. Make sure that each content part matches each other. For example, in the previous example, you may want to group together Japanese cars, Honda, Toyota, Toyota Camry, and Honda Civic together in one workflow. Accurate grouping of content parts is essential and will significantly improve the browsing experience of a visitor.
For example, in the previous example if you had correctly organized those content parts together a visitor will be able to quickly find the information he needs on your site. If he is interested in Japanese made cars, from your home page he will just click on the section that represents this preference and from there he can easily choose other related content should he desire to. For businesses, proper information organization in websites is essential.
Adding catchy and interesting descriptions to sections and categories is another good practice when managing content on your site. Section and category managers in your backend administration panel will contain a description field where you can input information that explains each section or category. Make sure that you include text that is interesting and at the same time relevant to the content part it is referring to.
For articles, make good use of the functionalities that Joomla has for creating text content. Joomla’s article panel contains a lot of tabs that can improve the appearance of your text. You can alter the size of fonts, use different fonts, or even make text colourful. Another thing that you can do to enhance your articles is to include photos in them. You can use photos that you took yourself or upload ones from Internet sites. Text with photos can improve the visual appeal of your site’s pages.
When managing content on your site, make sure to occasionally check the ratings of articles so that you will know which articles are popular and those that are not (you can view this using the backend panel of your Joomla site). This will serve as your guide as to what types of content you should develop for your audience.
